The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) has welcomed the Election Commission of India's decision to undertake a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The student body believes that the exercise is crucial to protecting the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, MZP President Dr. C. Lalremruata said that, for years, the MZP has expressed concern over the alleged inclusion of illegal immigrants in electoral rolls. Welcoming the Election Commission of India's decision to undertake a Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll across the country, Lalremruata said that the exercise is essential to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process and that only genuine Indian citizens should be allowed to vote.
Recalling the 1995 intensive revision of electoral rolls, the MZP president claimed that many ineligible names were identified and removed from voter lists during the exercise. He expressed hope that the ongoing revision would provide another opportunity to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate and credible.
Lalremruata said that the MZP will submit a formal complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer, seeking detailed scrutiny of 195 villages that it believes require closer examination during the revision process.
Urging the election authorities to conduct the exercise impartially and in accordance with the law, the MZP president said that every eligible voter must be protected, while every ineligible entry should be identified and removed through due process.
Lalremruata also called on authorities to undertake meticulous field verification and examine all complaints relating to electoral vulnerabilities.
