Chief Minister of Manipur Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday feted Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, Weight Lifter, 60 kg category (Men's) at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Imphal.
While felicitating the medallist, the Chief Minister extended his heartfelt congratulations to Weight Lifter for his outstanding performance at the recently held 23rd edition of Commonwealth Games 2026 at Glasgow, Scotland.
Lauding the sports movement in Manipur, the Chief Minister informed that the State Government has considered enhancing the incentives given to the medallists in international and national competitions.
Most of the sportspersons who brought medals belong to lower-income groups of families and despite the hardship they faced, they strive to bring laurels for the state and the nation, he added.
The chief minister said that perseverance and hard work are the prerequisites of being a sportsperson while adding that Manipur has a tradition and culture of supporting sportspersons by the local clubs and the community, whereas such culture is not prevalent in other regions outside Manipur.
Rishikanta Singh expressed his profound gratitude for the Chief Minister’s encouragement and motivational guidance.
Taking an example of himself on winning a silver medal, he said that especially those sportspersons belonging to lower-income groups of families should not be disheartened if they cannot afford the diet required for a sportsperson, and this wrong perception needs to be dispelled.
Rishikanta also said that he would bring more success in the future. Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam, MLAs Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, Th. Radheshyam, P. Brojen Singh, T.
