Fresh tensions have surfaced in Manipur’s Churachandpur district following a reported firing incident that villagers claim could have escalated into a major conflict.
According to a statement issued by Paominlun Haokip, Chief of Kungpi Naosen Village, suspected NSCN (IM) operatives allegedly opened fire on villagers from Kungpinaosen at around 2:30 pm on Friday. The villagers were reportedly working in nearby fields when shots were fired from elevated positions using automatic weapons. No injuries or casualties were reported, as those present managed to take shelter in time.
The incident has been described by village authorities as a “provocative act” aimed at disrupting peace and stoking tensions between Kuki and Naga communities in the area. The statement further warned that nearby villages — including K. Lhangnom, K. Hengmol, and K. Songjang — remain vulnerable and could face similar threats if the situation is not addressed promptly.
The village leadership also alleged ongoing attempts to create divisions between the Rongmei (Zeliangrong) Naga community and Kuki residents, which they say threatens longstanding coexistence in the region.
In response, the village chief has appealed to security forces and civil authorities to take immediate preventive measures, enhance protection for vulnerable settlements, and act decisively to avoid further escalation.
The appeal emphasized the need for swift intervention to preserve peace and maintain communal harmony, urging all stakeholders to prioritize stability over conflict.
