Former Additional Superintendent of Police (Additional SP) Thounaojam Brinda Devi has announced that she will contest the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly election in 2027 from the Yaiskul Assembly Constituency. However, she has not yet announced the political party under whose banner she will contest.
Speaking to the media at her residence in Yaiskul on Sunday, Brinda said she would soon reveal the political party under whose banner she will enter the electoral fray.
Brinda took voluntary retirement from service before entering politics. She had also contested the 2022 Assembly election from Yaiskul but lost to the sitting MLA and Speaker, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh.
Brinda claimed that she was dissatisfied with the policies of the government and the manner in which the State was governed while she was in service. As such, she decided to contest the Assembly election in 2022, although she was unsuccessful.
“Knowing that I will not be able to bring better policies and governance to the State unless I enter the State Assembly as a representative, I have made the decision to contest the election once again,” said Brinda.
If elected, Brinda said she plans to establish a Yaiskul People's Council in her constituency, which will be responsible for addressing and managing various issues concerning the welfare of the people.
To bring about positive change in the State, Brinda said candidates should be selected based on their willingness to sacrifice for the State rather than on their financial background.
“People supported the BJP in 2017 because they were dissatisfied with the governance of the Congress government. However, the destruction and losses suffered by the people of Manipur during the ten years under the BJP government have not been experienced under any other government in the country,” she said.
Speaking on the importance of establishing a regional party, Brinda said that every state in the country aspires to be governed by a regional party, and Manipur also needs a strong regional party to form the government.
“However, the big question is whether the people have the means and the power to support a regional party in forming a government,” Brinda added.
