Late BJP leader and former MLA Vungzagin Valte, who succumbed to his injuries on February 20, 2026, will finally be laid to rest, according to sources.

Valte, a three-time legislator representing the 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency, was severely injured on May 4, 2023, when he was allegedly attacked at Nagamapal in Imphal after meeting the then Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh. He remained under intensive medical care for more than three years before succumbing to his injuries in New Delhi earlier this year.

His mortal remains were flown from New Delhi via Aizawl and brought to his residence in Lamka on February 24, 2026. Since then, the body had been kept in the cold storage facility of the District Hospital mortuary as community leaders pursued demands for justice and accountability.

Following his death, Zomi frontal organisations constituted the Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC) to deliberate upon, coordinate, and oversee all matters relating to the late MLA, including engagement with the Centre, the State Government, and other concerned authorities on issues of justice and accountability. The committee functioned as the sole authorised coordinating body in matters concerning the late legislator.

Sources said that during a meeting held on Wednesday, the ZCC resolved to hand over Valte's mortal remains to his family to enable them to perform his final rites. The decision was reportedly taken in accordance with the wishes of the bereaved family. With the completion of its mandate, the committee has also been dissolved.

As of the filing of this report, there was no official confirmation regarding the date, time, or venue of the funeral and burial.

The ZCC had been engaging with the concerned authorities for nearly five months, seeking justice and accountability in connection with the death of the late BJP MLA before deciding to conclude its responsibilities.
