Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that a few people continue to oppose peace in the state because they benefit from the conflict.

The Chief Minister made the statement on Wednesday during the 8th Foundation Day celebration of the Chingamakha Nambul Mapal Development Committee at Chingamakha Yanglem Leikai Nambul Mapal in Imphal. Khemchand stressed the importance of restoring lasting peace and normalcy in the state.

Recalling his visits to Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Senapati, and Ukhrul, the Chief Minister claimed that he had witnessed encouraging signs of reconciliation among different communities.

Khemchand said that the Kuki, Paite, Hmar, and Meitei communities in Jiribam have resumed living together peacefully, sharing meals and returning to their homes. He added that he himself had lunch with members of the different communities.

While the government is making every effort to restore normalcy, lasting peace requires the cooperation of all sections of society. Khemchand said that a few people continue to oppose peace because they benefit from the conflict. He stressed the need to expose such vested interests and work collectively towards restoring normalcy.

Under the prevailing situation in Manipur, Meiteis, Kukis, and Nagas cannot travel freely across the state, Khemchand said. He added that the situation began on May 3, 2023, when clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. He further stated that the crisis expanded earlier this year when "problems" between the Kukis and the Nagas began.
