In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Churachandpur Police on Thursday seized 186 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar and arrested three individuals in connection with an alleged narcotics network operating in the district.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team led by SDPO Jay Barange, IPS, conducted a search operation at the residence of Zamngaihlian Tombing (48), wife of Thangzakap Tombing, at Zion Veng, New Lamka. The search was carried out in the presence of Executive Magistrate Satkhogin Kilong.
During the operation, police recovered 186 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar from the residence.
According to police, Zamngaihlian Tombing, during preliminary questioning, disclosed that the contraband had been supplied by Niangngaihching (43), daughter of late Chinkhenpau Guite of Pangzawl.
Based on the disclosure, the police team immediately raided Niangngaihching's residence. A thorough search led to the recovery of ₹31,43,500 in cash, which police suspect to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade.
During interrogation, Niangngaihching allegedly revealed the involvement of another associate, Manglunsang Tawtak (36), son of late T.S. Khamzakhup, also a resident of Pangzawl.
The police subsequently raided Tawtak's residence and apprehended him. During the search, officers recovered a white Bolero (Registration No. MN06LX5142) and a cash-counting machine.
All three accused, along with the seized narcotics, cash, vehicle, and other recovered items, were brought to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation.
Police are continuing the investigation to ascertain the source of the narcotics and identify any other individuals connected to the alleged drug trafficking network.
