A peaceful sit-in protest was organized Saturday by the Kuki Women’s Union and Human Rights (KWU & HR), Moreh Block, to condemn the alleged arbitrary detention and arrest of a prominent Kuki-Zo Civil Society Organization (CSO) leader. The protest took place in Moreh town, drawing participation from a wide range of community and civil society representatives.
Demonstrators gathered to voice their concern over what they described as unjust and selective actions by national investigating agencies, specifically the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to thePrime Minister of India through the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Moreh, urging immediate intervention.
CSO leaders present at the sit-in highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all investigative bodies function with fairness, transparency, and impartiality. They warned that any misuse of authority or biased targeting of community leaders threatens democratic norms and may aggravate existing tensions in the region.
“The NIA and CBI must carry out their duties in strict accordance with the Constitution, without bias or political influence,” said one protest leader. “We demand justice, not selective prosecution.”
Organizations supporting the protest included the Hill Tribal Council Moreh, Moreh Youth Club, Kuki Students’ Organisation Moreh Block, and Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi Moreh Block. Together with KWU & HR, they called for the immediate release of the detained leader and urged authorities to respect constitutional values and human rights.
