The Tipra Motha Party has secured a resounding victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council election 2026, winning 24 out of 28 seats and retaining control of the council with a commanding majority.
Led by Pradyot Kishore Manikya, the party reaffirmed its dominance in tribal politics, garnering widespread support across constituencies. TMP polled a total of 4,57,943 votes across all 28 seats it contested, far surpassing its rivals.
The Bharatiya Janata Party finished a distant second, managing to win just four seats with 2,18,072 votes despite an extensive campaign led by Chief Minister Manik Saha. The results come as a significant setback for the ruling party, which had also inducted senior Tipra Motha leaders ahead of the polls—both of whom were defeated.
Other parties failed to make any electoral gains. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) secured 71,335 votes across 25 constituencies but did not win a single seat, despite finishing second in several areas. The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) received 17,664 votes across 24 constituencies, while the Indian National Congress (INC) polled 15,180 votes across 27 seats—both failing to open their accounts.
The outcome highlights strong backing among tribal voters for Tipra Motha’s platform centered on indigenous rights, dignity, and greater autonomy.
Meanwhile, internal developments within TMP suggest possible cabinet changes. Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma is reportedly facing replacement amid indications of strained ties within the party.
The TTAADC governs nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographic area and plays a crucial role in administering tribal regions.
The election, held across 28 constituencies—most reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates—was counted on April 17.
With this decisive mandate, Tipra Motha has further consolidated its position as the leading political force in Tripura’s tribal belt.
