Manipur Police arrested two extortionists suspected to be NSCN (IM) cadres from Sibilong along NH-37 under Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district.

According to the police, the two individuals have been identified as Gaisuaklung Ngaomei (45), a resident of Bhalok village in Tamenglong district, and Job Gangmei (29), a resident of Sibilong Part-II, Tousem Sub-Division, Tamenglong district.

From their possession, police seized one live cartridge, Rs. 22,000 in cash, and two Baofeng communication sets with chargers.

The arrests come days after the Manipur Government and the Core Committee of the Consortium of Petroleum Products Transporters, Retail Outlet Dealers, LPG Distributors and Drivers' Associations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen convoy movement along NH-37.

The agreement provides for the formation of a Coordination Committee to revise the existing Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) within a month, the appointment of Nodal Officers to oversee convoy operations, strict enforcement of the current SoP, and special drives by district police to curb extortion along the highway.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at the CM's Secretariat on August 1.
