The Government of Manipur has agreed to provide ex-gratia compensation to the next of kin of 32 Kuki-Zo civilians who lost their lives in violence attributed to NSCN-IM and ZUF(K), following a meeting with the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) on Thursday.
The meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the District Magistrate's Office in Churachandpur, where representatives of the state government met the KZC Cabinet to discuss the prevailing situation and various concerns and demands of the Kuki-Zo people.
Following detailed deliberations, the government also agreed to take responsibility for transporting the deceased to their respective villages for the final rites. Both the compensation and transportation arrangements are expected to be completed within seven days, according to a statement issued by the KZC.
During the meeting, the KZC raised several other issues relating to the security, welfare and political aspirations of the Kuki-Zo community. The government has taken these demands under consideration and assured the council that they would be reviewed and addressed in due course.
While welcoming the commitments concerning the bereaved families, the KZC stressed that the broader grievances and legitimate political aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people require concrete and time-bound action.
The council further stated that it would continue engaging with the government until meaningful outcomes are achieved.
