The Joint Tribe Council Manipur (JTCM) has announced an immediate restriction on the movement of goods-laden trucks and vehicles along National Highways passing through the territories of the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme Naga communities, until further notice.
According to the JTCM, the decision was taken in protest against what it described as the government’s failure to adequately respond to the concerns and security of the Naga community.
The council referred to the injuries sustained by peaceful protesters at Namdilong in Kangpokpi district on August 20 and the alleged abduction and killing of six Naga men, including two pastors, in May this year.
The JTCM stated that the six men were allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13, with their mutilated and beheaded bodies reportedly recovered on June 10 after an extensive search. It expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation after the case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), alleging that the perpetrators had not yet been identified or brought to justice.
The council also raised concerns over the security situation in Naga-inhabited areas, alleging that security operations have disproportionately affected Naga Village Guards, while armed groups continue to pose a threat to villagers.
The Working Committee appealed to all area coordination committees to observe the restriction peacefully and maintain solidarity. It warned that the agitation could be intensified if the government continues to disregard what it described as the safety, security and dignity of the Naga community.
