On the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour, the Integrated Rural Management Association (IRMA), in coordination with the district administration, conducted an awareness programme at Kangpokpi on Thursday to educate children and the community about the dangers of child labour and trafficking.

The initiative was organized in response to the state government's directive designating June as the "Action Month" against child labour. Under this campaign, various departments, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations are carrying out awareness drives, joint inspections, and rescue operations in areas vulnerable to child labour.

As part of the observance, IRMA also conducted awareness programmes involving community leaders and villagers, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect children from exploitation.

IRMA is a partner organization of the Just Rights for Children, the country's largest child protection network comprising more than 250 partner organizations working together to strengthen child protection systems across India.

Officials highlighted that child trafficking remains one of the primary factors contributing to child labour. Consequently, district administrations, police authorities, and grassroots organizations are maintaining strict vigilance to identify traffickers and dismantle trafficking networks. Throughout June, coordinated efforts are being undertaken to rescue children engaged in child labour and ensure their rehabilitation.

Speaking on the occasion, T. Lamjaneng Haokip, Director of IRMA, reaffirmed the organization's commitment to child protection.

"Every child rescued from labour is a child whose right to education, safety, and dignity is restored. Child labour deprives children of their childhood and fundamental rights and must be addressed with the utmost urgency. No child belongs in a workplace; every child belongs in school," she said.

She further emphasized the close link between child labour and child trafficking, stating that IRMA would continue working alongside the administration and law enforcement agencies to rescue vulnerable children, prevent trafficking, and ensure that rescued children receive proper care, rehabilitation, and opportunities for a better future.

According to IRMA, the strength of the child protection network lies in its collective vigilance and collaboration. Partner organizations across the country regularly share information and track trafficking cases, enabling timely interventions and rescues.

Notably, the Just Rights for Children network has rescued more than 145,000 children from trafficking between April 2023 and March 2026. A significant number of these children were trafficked and subsequently forced into child labour, underscoring the urgent need for sustained action against both trafficking and child exploitation.

The programme concluded with a call for greater community participation in safeguarding children's rights and ensuring that every child has access to education, protection, and a safe childhood.
