The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with great fervour at Public Ground, Hiangtam Lamka, in Churachandpur. Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S unfurled the National Flag and received the Rashtriya Salute as Chief Guest from 31 contingents, including the BSF, civil police, NCC cadets, and school students.

Addressing the gathering of citizens, officials, and students, the Deputy Commissioner reminded all that Republic Day is not only a celebration of the Constitution but also a reaffirmation of India’s democratic spirit. He described the tricolour as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resilience, urging everyone to remember that freedom is both a right and a responsibility.

Reflecting on the district’s journey since his Independence Day speech in 2023, Dharun Kumar acknowledged the extraordinary challenges faced, including social unrest, displacement, and logistical constraints. Despite these difficulties, he praised officers and staff for their impartiality, professionalism, and commitment to constitutional duty, noting that governance in such times demands courage, endurance, and steadfast dedication to the people.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted progress across multiple sectors. Rural development has advanced through employment generation under MGNREGS and housing initiatives under PMAY-G, while Amrit Sarovar ponds have strengthened water security. Aspirational blocks such as Lamka South and Tuibong have shown measurable gains in education, health, and infrastructure. Healthcare has seen major milestones with the inauguration of CHC Saikot by the Prime Minister, the foundation stone of CHC Singhat by the President, and the launch of a B.Sc. Nursing course, alongside Tele-ICU services and mental health programmes. Education has been bolstered by support for displaced students, successful examinations, and the establishment of a 200-node IT Examination Centre, enabling thousands of youth to pursue competitive opportunities locally.

He also noted the district’s role in relief and rehabilitation, housing the largest number of internally displaced persons in the state across 93 camps, where food, bedding, hygiene kits, and childcare materials have been distributed. Sustained coordination between civil administration and security agencies, he said, has been vital in maintaining law and order and safeguarding lives and infrastructure.

Expressing gratitude to district officers, security forces, health workers, engineers, volunteers, and civil society organisations, Dharun Kumar said their dedication had brought honour to Churachandpur and Manipur, especially during the Prime Minister’s visit. Concluding his address, he called upon the youth to lead with integrity and skill, stressing that the Republic’s strength lies in responsibility, discipline, and unity in diversity. He urged citizens to renew their pledge to uphold the Constitution and work tirelessly for peace, development, and national unity.

The ceremony also featured the distribution of commendations to 75 government officials and staff, 133 police and security personnel, eight civil organisations, and 12 village authorities for their contributions to public service and district administration. Cultural performances added colour to the celebrations, with students of JNV, Tuinom, dancers from We Dance Academy, and a bamboo dance presented by the Hmar Students’ Association, Churachandpur College Unit. Republic Day was also observed at the Sub-Divisional Headquarters level across the district. (DIO Ccpur)
