Zomi civil society organisations (CSOs) have jointly called for a total shutdown across Zomi-dominated areas of Churachandpur district on April 22, 2026, citing the continued absence of justice in the case of late BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte.
The shutdown, scheduled from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM, has been announced by Zomi frontal organisation - Zomi Chiefs’ Association, Zomi Youth Association, Zomi Students’ Federation, Zomi Mothers Association, and the Central Village Defence Force.
In a joint statement, the organisations described the shutdown as a “peaceful expression of collective conscience” and a strong assertion against delays in delivering justice. They expressed concern that the circumstances surrounding Valte’s prolonged suffering and subsequent death remain unresolved.
All commercial activities, educational institutions, offices, and public movement within the district will remain suspended during the shutdown period. The organisations have stated that no exemptions will be permitted, and essential services such as pharmacies and water supply will also remain closed.
Transportation routes, including Tipaimukh Road and Guite Road, will be blocked, effectively restricting movement into and out of the district.
However, arrangements have been made for medical emergencies. Approved ambulances will be stationed at designated locations, and emergency contact numbers have been issued for public use.
Residents have been advised to make necessary preparations in advance and adjust any prior commitments accordingly. The organisations also warned that strict discipline will be enforced during the shutdown, and any violations will be dealt with seriously.
The CSOs further indicated that the duration of the shutdown could be extended depending on the situation. The announcement has been made, according to the organisations, “in the interest of justice, collective responsibility, and public order.”
