
Retired Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (IRS) Doungul Paukholien Haokip (D.P. Haokip) from Salbung Village in Churachandpur district of Manipur has announced his candidature for the 59-Saikot Assembly Constituency ahead of the 2027 Manipur Assembly election.
The 1985-batch Indian Revenue Service officer officially announced his candidature at his residence on Thursday.
Speaking to the media, D.P. Haokip said, “In the coming 2027 election, I want to contest the Assembly election for the welfare of my people. After serving the Government of India for more than 35 years, I have seen a lot of good things from outside. After retirement, I want to give back all those good things I have seen and learned outside to my own people and my nation.”
Haokip said he wanted to contest the elections Biblically and that the two bible verses which encourage him are Mathew 6:33," But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" and John 14:6 "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me".
D. P. Haokip also informed that he wanted to contest the elections from the Congress, provided if he is given a ticket which he said is because Congress is a secular party.
As far as Christians faith are concern, Haokip alleged that under the BJP there are lots of "persecution and trials".
"In order to fight all these, I think Congress is the right platform for me,” he added.
As far as Saikot Assembly Constituency is concerned, Haokip claimed that most of the Christian churches are of the view that, in the coming election as far as electorates are concern they are for the Congress party.
He claimed that many of the Christian faith brothers and sisters will not go for the BJP because of their ideology and alleged persecution they have alegedly persecuted upon christians.
If elected, Haokip said his number one priority will be that all government offices and servants should work with integrity, accountability and social development.
As far as government funds are concerned, Haokip said it should reach to the beneficiary and those funds cannot be diverted through the process.
