Supporters of Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam staged a rally and sit-in protest in Imphal on Wednesday against the allegations levelled against the MP, leading to a confrontation with police near the BJP state office at Keishampat in Imphal West.
Supporters from different parts of the state gathered at the MP’s residence at Keishamthong. As the supporters marched towards the BJP office, police intervened and stop the protesters at Keishampat Junction which is not far away from the BJP office.
However, some supporters managed to reach the BJP office and raised slogans during which a confrontation broke out when security personnel tried to control the crowd.
The protesters were later turned back towards Keishamthong Keithel, where they staged a sit-in protest. Bimol Akoijam also came out of his residence and interacted with his supporters. Speaking to media, one of the protestor Rohan Philem who is also an activist describe the allegations against the MP as a politically motivated and an attempt to silence him.
Claiming that the protest was organised voluntarily to express solidarity with MP Bimol, whom he described as the voice of the people of Manipur, Rohan questioned what he called the unequal treatment of political protests, alleging that supporters of the MP faced restrictions while similar demonstrations by BJP leaders and supporters had been allowed.
The activist also claimed that the allegations were an attempt to silence the MP’s voice in Parliament and said the people of Manipur would continue to stand by him.
Addressing his supporters, Bimol Akoijam said he is prepared to face harassment, torture or imprisonment while fighting for his motherland. He said he had served the nation for more than 30 years as a professor, shaping the lives of students across the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Nagaland.
Bimol Akoijam alleged that he was being targeted because he belonged to a small state and challenged those behind the allegations to proceed against him, asserting that he would continue his fight for Manipur despite any consequences.
