Mizoram Village Gives Away Fresh Harvest to Travellers, Reflecting Culture of Sharing

A village in Mizoram's Lunglei district has won admiration for distributing freshly harvested crops free of charge to travellers and visitors, in a gesture that reflects the state's deeply rooted tradition of generosity and community spirit.

Residents of Thualthu village, located about 30 kilometres from Lunglei town along the Lawngtlai Road, invited passers-by on Wednesday to choose from a variety of fresh produce and take home whatever they wished, free of cost.

The farmers said the initiative was their way of expressing gratitude to God for blessing them with a good harvest. Rather than selling all their produce, they chose to share a portion of it with others, continuing a long-standing culture of giving within Mizo society.

The gesture embodies Zo Nun Zemawi — the Mizo way of life centred on kindness, generosity, mutual care, and respect for others. These values have long been regarded as a defining feature of life in the northeastern state.

Mizoram has earned recognition in recent years for examples of trust and social responsibility, including its Nghah Loh Dawr (unmanned stores), where goods are sold without attendants and customers are trusted to pay voluntarily. The state is also often noted for its strong civic sense and community-driven initiatives.

For many in the state, the act was not merely about giving away food but about strengthening social bonds and expressing thankfulness through generosity. (IANS)
