With the aim of reforming the Mizo Reunification Movement, a new organisation called the Mizo National Front Integration Movement (MNF-IM) was formed on September 16.
The MNF-IM issued a release on September 16 announcing its formation, stating that a cabinet expansion would be announced shortly.
The MNF-IM stated: “After having numerous consultative meetings with politicians, civil society leaders, and various intellectuals from the Mizo community, the sons and daughters of ex-MNF freedom fighters living in Northern Mizoram decided to reform the Mizo Reunification Movement, thus rechristened as the Mizo National Front-Integration Movement (MNF-IM), on September 14, 2025 — the day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mizoram, including Lamka.”
The release further stated that the Mizo people (all non-Naga tribes) living in the state of Manipur — hereinafter referred to as Northern Mizoram — have long been demanding from the Indian government the right to self-determination, either in the form of integration with the state of Mizoram or the creation of a separate Union Territory within the Indian Union. These demands date back to the Mizoram Independence Movement of the 1960s.
The late MNF President, Laldenga, had firmly and passionately urged the Government of India to merge the Mizo-inhabited areas of adjoining Manipur, Assam, and Tripura with the state of Mizoram so that the Mizo people could live and thrive under one administration, the release added.
However, due to the delay tactics and short-sightedness of the then Congress government, the Mizo people remain divided to this day, the MNF-IM stated.
“Had the Congress government decisively passed the demand for the unification of Mizo-inhabited areas in 1986, the Mizo (Kuki) vs Manipur Naga conflict in the 1990s, the fratricidal Kuki-Zomi clashes in 1997, and the ethnic cleansing campaign perpetrated by the N. Biren Singh-led Manipur Government against the Mizo (Hmar-Kuki-Zomi) people — which began on May 3, 2023, and continues to this day — would never have occurred. All such conflicts and the suffering on both sides could have been totally avoided,” it stated.
Moreover, the division, betrayal, extortion, and fratricidal killings within the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar/Mizo society in Northern Mizoram have already taken a huge toll on the community and families, with no remedy in sight, the release stated.
The MNF-IM declared that it will oppose any form of division or action that is detrimental to the unity and security of the Mizo tribes. It appealed to all Mizos — regardless of tribe — to cooperate as they embark on this new journey, acknowledging the many challenges ahead.
While appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Lamka (Churachandpur) on September 13, 2025, the MNF-IM stated that the Prime Minister had ultimately failed to deliver what was expected by the people.
