In a defining moment for Manipur hills' grassroots sporting landscape, Laizon Football Academy (LFA), Keithelmanbi etched its name into the annals of Sadar Hills football history by clinching the inaugural Sadar Hills Under-18 Football Tournament title after a nerve-racking penalty shootout triumph over the valiant Khulkon Football Club (KFC), Konghom Saikul, at Brig. M. Thomas Ground in strife-torn Kangpokpi District on Saturday.

The month-long football extravaganza, organised by the Sadar Hills Football Academy (SHFA) in collaboration with Sadar Hills District Sports Association (SHDSA), marked the first-ever Under-18 football tournament in the sporting history of Sadar Hills Kangpokpi District — a watershed initiative widely hailed as a transformative platform for cultivating the district’s next generation of football stars.

Against the backdrop of roaring spectators, surging anticipation and an electric football atmosphere, two of Sadar Hills’ finest emerging football powers — Laizon FA and Khulkon FC — delivered a final for the ages, showcasing skill, grit and extraordinary competitive spirit.

Laizon FA struck first in dramatic fashion during the 12th minute when sustained offensive pressure triggered a heartbreaking defensive lapse from Khulkon FC defender Thangkholet, whose unfortunate own goal handed Laizon an early breakthrough and sent the Keithelmanbi faithful into rapturous celebration.

Riding on confidence and momentum, Laizon intensified their attacking tempo with swift transitions and tactical precision, but Khulkon FC displayed remarkable resilience, refusing to bow under mounting pressure.

The second half transformed into a fierce battle of determination and redemption as Khulkon FC staged a stirring comeback. Their relentless pursuit of parity finally bore fruit in the 73rd minute when Lenneithang unleashed a brilliant equaliser, reviving Khulkon’s hopes and igniting thunderous cheers from their supporters.

With both sides locked at 1-1 after regulation time and neither willing to surrender, the historic championship encounter descended into football’s ultimate cauldron of pressure — the penalty shootout.

What followed was a breathtaking test of nerves, composure and heroism.

Laizon FA goalkeeper Mangpilun Kipgen emerged as the undisputed hero of the final, producing a sensational goalkeeping masterclass under crushing pressure. With three stunning saves in the shootout, Mangpilun single-handedly tilted the balance in Laizon’s favour, delivering one of the tournament’s most unforgettable performances.

Laizon’s penalty takers held their composure with clinical finishing, converting three crucial spot-kicks, while Khulkon FC managed only one successful conversion despite their goalkeeper’s own courageous efforts, including two commendable saves.

When the final whistle confirmed Laizon FA’s 4-2 aggregate triumph via tie-break, scenes of jubilation erupted as Keithelmanbi’s young footballers became the first-ever champions of the historic Sadar Hills U-18 Cup.

Laizon FA walked away with the coveted championship trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 30,000, while runners-up Khulkon FC earned Rs. 15,000 along with widespread praise for their inspiring campaign and fighting spirit.

The tournament also celebrated standout individual brilliance. Khulkon FC’s Thangkholet Khongsai was honoured as Best Defender, while teammate Letminsei Touthang secured the Top Scorer award. Laizon’s heroic shot-stopper Mangpilun Kipgen was deservedly crowned Best Goalkeeper, while teammate Lamgoumang Kipgen’s exceptional consistency and leadership earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament title.

Beyond trophies and accolades, the successful culmination of the inaugural championship symbolised far more — it heralded the dawn of a new footballing era in Sadar Hills and underscored Manipur’s enduring reputation as a powerhouse of sporting talent.

For local football enthusiasts, coaches and aspiring athletes alike, the tournament was not merely a competition, but a historic breakthrough — a transformative milestone poised to inspire, shape and elevate the district’s footballing future for generations to come.
