In regards to the 24-hour shutdown called by the Committee on Tribal Unity in connection with the alleged shooting of a man at Shantipur on Wednesday, Manipur Police have issued a clarification regarding the incident.

According to the police, at about 9:30 pm on April 8, a Chevrolet Cruze (WB-06C-7444) with three occupants and an Alto car with one occupant, which came from the Kangpokpi side and Sekmai side respectively, arrived at Kanglatongbi Bridge to exchange their vehicles and conduct a test drive. During the process, the Cruze met with a minor accident after falling into a nullah, following which police personnel from the security naka at Kanglatongbi Hindi High School near Shantipur immediately rushed to the spot and attended to them.

Meanwhile, the accompanying Alto car approached at high speed, ignored repeated signals to stop, and nearly hit security personnel on duty. Upon noticing the police presence, the occupants attempted to flee towards Kangpokpi.

In view of the imminent risk and suspicious behaviour, security personnel fired controlled rounds aimed at the tyres to stop the vehicle. However, the vehicle did not halt and continued fleeing. Subsequently, it was learned that the driver of the Alto car, Lenkhogin Tuboi, sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital, Kangpokpi, for treatment, police stated.

The driver of the Cruze, Janggingen Khongsai (21), was detained, handed over to G. Saparmeina Police Station, and later released after due formalities were observed. An FIR has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.

Manipur Police reiterated that the action taken was in response to suspicious behaviour, attempted evasion, and a threat to personnel on duty. The public is advised not to be misled by unverified information.
