Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam today visited JNIMS Hospital to inspect the condition of an injured police constable and also paid respect to the deceased non-Manipuri victim following the ambush that took place earlier today along National Highway-202 between Leingangching and TM Kasom under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul District.
The deceased has been identified as Nitish Kumar aged around 57 years, son of Bidas Kumar from West Bengal, who was working as an FCI truck driver. The injured person has been identified as Disingam Maringmei (35) son of Meikhenthing, Sangaiprou Kabui Khul, Imphal West, presently serving at Litan Police Station. He sustained bullet injuries on both legs during the incident.
Speaking to reporters at JNIMS Hospital, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam expressed deep sorrow over the incident and stated that the Government is taking the matter very seriously. He assured that strict action would be taken against those involved and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits at the earliest.
Regarding the possibility of handing over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Home Minister said that as of now there is no such plan.
He further stated that the area where the ambush occurred falls under BSF coverage and efforts would be made to examine what lapses or gaps might have occurred. He added that though the area is dominated by a particular group, it cannot be confirmed at the moment who was behind the attack and said the truth would come out soon.
The Home Minister also informed that security personnel deployed outside the State for election duties are now returning and security operations would be intensified further in both hill and valley areas of the State.
