Chief Secretary of Manipur, PK Singh, has announced that the Manipur government plans to shut all relief camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) by December 2025.
Singh also stated that those who are unable to return to their homes will be accommodated in newly constructed prefabricated houses.
The Chief Secretary made the announcement while speaking to the media on the sidelines of the second foundation day of the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes on Friday in Imphal.
He informed that the rehabilitation of IDPs will take place in three phases—starting in July, followed by October—and is expected to be completed by December 2025.
For around 7,500 houses that were destroyed, the government will provide financial assistance of ₹1.3 lakh plus ₹1.73 lakh. For another 7,000 people who fled their homes, even though their houses are not destroyed, some form of monetary help will be provided, he informed.
Those unable to return home even after December will be allowed to stay in prefabricated houses. The government is building 1,000 more such houses, he added.
The Chief Secretary also stated that the state and central governments are making a joint effort to ensure that highways are open to the public, and that they are expected to reopen soon.
He further informed that adequate forces have been deployed in vulnerable areas, especially in paddy fields. He added that things are improving and farming activities are proceeding peacefully.
“Things are improving… one or two things apart. Farming is going on. I am glad to share that both sides are farming together—I mean, within eye-ball-to-eye-ball distance—and sharing water. That's a very good sign. We have appealed to CSOs to maintain calm. One or two incidents can happen here and there. Mischievous elements are everywhere,” Singh added.
On the reported visit of Prime Minister Modi to the state, Singh said it is expected but not yet confirmed.
He also mentioned that many projects are ready for inauguration, including the Civil Secretariat, as well as the Manipur Bhavan in Delhi and Kolkata. All of these could be inaugurated together. He concluded by appealing to CSOs to maintain peace and calm.
