The Kuki Inpi Manipur has strongly opposed a proposal by the Government of Manipur to replace Central Security Forces with state forces in the hill and foothill regions.
In a statement issued following remarks by the state’s Home Minister, the Kuki Inpi declared that the Kuki community would “categorically reject” any such move, warning that it could aggravate the already fragile situation in the conflict-affected areas.
The organisation alleged that the proposal appears to project an image of peace and stability while effectively tightening the state government’s control over Kuki-inhabited regions. It further claimed that such actions could perpetuate what it described as “oppression and subjugation” of the Kuki people.
Highlighting ongoing tensions in the region, the Kuki Inpi expressed concern over what it termed a “complete loss of credibility and accountability” of the state government. It cautioned that altering the current security arrangement amid continuing volatility could escalate tensions and potentially trigger further clashes on the ground.
“The Kuki people view any attempt to replace Central forces as a direct threat to their safety and security,” the statement noted.
The organisation reiterated that the community places its trust in Central Security Forces, citing their role in maintaining neutrality and providing a sense of protection during the ongoing crisis. It warned that withdrawing these forces could further destabilise the region.
Calling for restraint, the Kuki Inpi urged authorities to maintain the existing deployment of Central forces in the interest of peace and stability. It also appealed to the state government to refrain from decisions affecting Kuki-inhabited areas and their land.
