The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has issued a strong statement alleging escalating attacks on Kuki villages and demanding immediate intervention from authorities, citing a deteriorating law-and-order situation in Manipur's Ukhrul district.
The committee stated that Kuki communities have cooperated with government agencies “from day one,” including dismantling defensive bunkers to prevent escalation. It asserted that any retaliatory firing from Kuki villagers has been strictly in self-defence.
Citing what it termed as “photo evidence,” the committee contrasted this cooperation with the stance of Thawai Tangkhul village, which it alleged has openly opposed the entry and functioning of security forces, raising “serious concerns about lawlessness.”
Detailing the “ground reality,” the committee claimed that since 6:00 PM on April 5, 2026, Thawai Kuki and Shangkai villages have been under attack. It further alleged that from 8:30 AM on April 6, Mongkot Chepu has faced sustained assaults involving automatic weapons and explosives, reportedly hitting residential homes.
The statement also alleged that Kuki civilian commuters between Leplen and Tingpibung came under fire. Additionally, it claimed that personnel from Litan Police fired rocket launchers around 1:30 PM on April 6, triggering a jungle fire in Mongkot Chepu and further endangering civilians.
According to the committee, the attacks are allegedly being carried out by “Tangkhul Narco-Terrorists” operating from Thawai Tangkhul, Sinakeithel and Sikibung villages, with purported local support.
Expressing “urgent concern,” the committee alleged that security forces on the ground remain ineffective due to lack of clear authority, acting as “mere spectators” even as violence escalates.
The Kuki CSO Working Committee has put forward three immediate demands: empowering security forces with clear operational authority, ensuring protection of civilians and safe movement, and conducting impartial investigations into all reported incidents.
“The situation is critical. Decisive action cannot be delayed,” the statement said.
