As part of World Environment Day, which is globally observed on June 5, the Kuki Students’ Organisation Churachandpur and the District Forest Office, South Forest Division, Churachandpur, organised a ‘Town Cleaning cum Plantation Drive’ in Churachandpur town.
Leaders of the KSO, staff from the Forest Department, and students from higher secondary schools and colleges in the district—particularly Salt Brook School and Orion Academy—participated in collecting waste scattered in and around Peace Ground. During the drive, KSO Churachandpur also provided saplings to the public.
As part of the event, Abhijith K.V., District Forest Officer (DFO), Churachandpur, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of maintaining the environment for better living conditions.
The DFO also highlighted the significance of proper disposal of plastic waste. Prizes were distributed to students who secured top positions in a district-level painting competition recently organised by the Forest Department.
In his speech, KSO Churachandpur President T. Letminlen Haokip stated that plastic waste is a major threat to the environment. He added that KSO has taken a keen interest in cleaning and reducing plastic waste.
Letminlen further informed participants that KSO actively took part in the World Environment Day observance with the aim of spreading awareness about plastic use. He appealed to the public to stop using plastic and to replace it with more easily degradable alternatives.
In a similar event, World Environment Day 2025 was commemorated today at S. Kawtlian with an inspiring Tree Plantation and Cleanliness Drive. The event, organized collaboratively by Development Horizon and the Indian Army, in association with Kuki Youth Affairs and Lhangkichoi FPC, was supported by the Forest Department of Churachandpur.
The program began at 8:00 a.m., with Cindia Nemboi, Skill Coordinator at Development Horizon, introducing the event. A solemn prayer led by the Chief of S. Kawtlian set the tone for the day. The event was officially launched by the Indian Army, followed by a welcome address by Jacob, from the Finance Department of Development Horizon.
The occasion was marked by meaningful speeches delivered by representatives of the collaborating partners and the Kawtlian Village Authority (VA). Saplings were distributed to villagers as part of the initiative, reflecting the collective commitment to environmental conservation. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by the Indian Army and a closing prayer by the Chief of Pengjang.
The event successfully highlighted the importance of environmental preservation through active participation and collaboration. Light refreshments were served afterward, fostering community spirit and camaraderie.
