Churachandpur District Journalist Union has condemned the harassment and intimidation of a Thangchinlian Langel, an editor of Churachandpur based local daily newspaper Lamka Times allegedly by Assam Rifles and CRPF personnel on Sunday.
The Churachandpur District Journalists Union (CDJU) stated that while Langel was covering a demonstration by youths near the Churachandpur Police Station protesting the police's refusal to release some of those arrested, he was repeatedly intimidated and compelled to delete photos and videos he had taken.
Despite identifying himself as a journalist and presenting his press card, Langel was allegedly subjected to coercive actions by security forces at Kangkap Centre, Lamka, and again by CRPF officers on Thangzam Road, Lamka, CDJU added.
Stating that the union considers such actions of security forces as serious infringement on press freedom and an attempt to suppress journalistic coverage of a public protest and security forces' actions, the union also demanded that the authorities take strict action against those responsible for harassing Thangchinlian Langel and ensure journalists can perform their duties without fear of intimidation or coercion.
