Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term at a grand ceremony held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati. With this, the BJP-led NDA formed the government in the state for the third consecutive term, marking a significant political milestone in Assam’s history.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Lakshman Prasad Acharya in the presence of several senior NDA leaders, including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and BJP national president Nitin Nabin, along with chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.
Extensive security arrangements, including barricades, traffic diversions and multi-layered deployments, were put in place across the Khanapara area ahead of the high-profile swearing-in ceremony.
Along with Sarma, four MLAs were sworn in as ministers in the new cabinet. They include Rameswar Teli, Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People's Front. Former minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been named as the NDA’s candidate for the Speaker’s post in the Assam Assembly.
Speaking after taking oath, Sarma said that implementing the BJP’s electoral promises and accelerating the state’s development agenda would remain the government’s key priorities during its new term.
The NDA alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, AGP and BPF, secured a massive mandate in the 126-member Assam Assembly by winning 102 seats. The BJP alone won 82 seats, achieving its first-ever single-party majority in the state, while AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.
