Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has urged people to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the valley so that security forces can effectively carry out operations in the hill areas.

Govindas said security forces have intensified operations in the hill districts by deploying additional personnel, including COBRA commandos, to restore peace and carry out the ongoing de-weaponisation exercise.

The minister was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the International Olympic Day programme at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal.

While minor incidents may occur in the valley, the major security concerns remain in the hill areas, Govindas said, adding that the peaceful situation in the valley has enabled security forces to deploy more personnel in the hill districts to track down those involved in violent activities and accelerate the de-weaponisation drive.

Appealing to the public to maintain peace and communal harmony, the Home Minister expressed hope that lasting peace would return to the state, paving the way for a progressive Manipur.
