Incessant rainfall over the past few days in Churachandpur district has led to a flood-like situation in several areas, causing difficulties and hardships for the local population.

The continuous downpour has also caused a significant rise in the water level of the Khuga Dam, compelling the concerned authorities to open three spillways of the dam on July 9.

Following the opening of the spillways, along with the persistent rainfall, the Tuitha River overflowed and partly submerged inter-village roads and houses located near the riverbanks.

In total, 22 houses were affected in Joulen, 25 in Kamdou Veng, 20 in Kerith, 25 in Zoumunnuom, 18 in Nazareth Veng, 2 in PCI Colony, and 24 houses in Khangthang Veng and New Zouveng. The situation prompted many villagers to relocate to safer places.

Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur, Dharun Kumar, along with SDO Tuibong Jangminlen Lupho and staff, visited the affected villages on Thursday, beginning with Joulen Village. The team distributed emergency relief packages consisting of rice, pulses, salt, and edible oil.

The DC team also inspected the riverbanks between Kamdou Veng and Zoumunnuom—believed to be the area where the river overflowed—and assured that sandbags would be placed to prevent further flooding.

During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner instructed the SDO to coordinate with village authorities and begin the preventive work on Friday.

The Deputy Commissioner urged villagers living near the river to remain alert and advised them to move to safer areas in case of heavy rainfall. He also assured them of continued support and assistance from the administration.
