In a strong move against what it termed a deliberate misinformation campaign, a functionary of the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has lodged a formal complaint with the Officer-in-Charge of Kangpokpi Police Station seeking registration of an FIR against administrators of certain WhatsApp channels and a Facebook page accused of circulating fabricated and defamatory content targeting the apex Kuki body.
According to the complaint submitted by Paojalal Hangshing, Assistant Secretary, Information and Publicity, KIM, the WhatsApp channels “Behind the Truth” and “Zomi Info”, along with the Facebook page “Northeast Publish”, allegedly published and circulated a fabricated press release falsely attributed to Kuki Inpi Manipur.
The complaint alleged that the contents of the publication were “entirely false, misleading and defamatory” and were intentionally created to malign the image of KIM, provoke communal tensions and disturb public peace.
Hangshing stated that despite clarification issued by KIM through its official social media platforms, the alleged fake statement continued to be circulated across social media, amplifying misinformation and potentially inflaming public sentiments.
Describing the act as a serious threat to communal harmony and public order, the complaint contended that the dissemination of fabricated information may attract provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, and other laws relating to defamation, publication of false information and acts prejudicial to public tranquillity.
Seeking immediate intervention, the complainant urged the police to register an FIR against all persons involved in the creation and dissemination of the alleged fake publication, conduct a comprehensive investigation into its origin, secure digital records and subscriber details from the concerned platforms, and initiate legal proceedings against those responsible.
The complaint further requested authorities to take measures to prevent any further circulation of the disputed content.
Supporting documents, including screenshots of the posts and copies of the alleged fabricated statement, were enclosed with the complaint.
The representation was received at Kangpokpi Police Station on June 3, with KIM expressing hope that prompt legal action would be taken in the interest of justice, public order and communal harmony.
