Ailing Woman from Tousem Sub-Division Carried on Bamboo Stretcher to Assam for Treatment

An ailing woman from Deigie village in Tousem Sub-Division of Tamenglong district was carried on a makeshift bamboo stretcher to Lamina Hospital in Pailapool, Assam, on Friday.

The woman has been identified as Heziakgale Pame, wife of Heichiliang Pame, from Deigie village.

According to villagers, her exact illness has not yet been confirmed.

Villagers said that the road conditions between Tousem and the Tamenglong district headquarters remain severely poor. As a result, they were unable to transport the patient to District Hospital Tamenglong.

Instead, they carried her towards Assam, crossing the Jiri River, after which comparatively better road connectivity was available to reach the hospital at Pailapool.

The incident has once again highlighted the serious difficulties faced by residents of the remote Tousem Sub-Division, particularly during medical emergencies. The lack of motorable roads continues to affect access to healthcare and other essential services in the area.

Tousem Sub-Division, which borders Assam and Nagaland, is among the most underdeveloped areas of Tamenglong district. Residents have long faced challenges related to road connectivity, healthcare, education, banking facilities, and access to government offices.

The latest incident has renewed calls from villagers for the immediate improvement of road infrastructure and essential services in the subdivision. They said that patients should not have to depend on makeshift stretchers and cross state borders simply to access basic medical care.
