The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki community, has condemned an ambush on civilians between Molnoi and Phaikoh in Manipur’s Kamjong district, in which a woman, identified as Hatneikim Haokip, was killed. Two other civilians remain missing, according to a statement issued by the apex body.
The incident reportedly occurred between 4 pm and 5 pm when four civilians, travelling as two couples on two two-wheelers, came under attack. Hatneikim Haokip, wife of Jangkhongam Haokip, died at the spot, while her husband reportedly escaped despite sustaining bullet injuries.
The whereabouts of the other two travellers, identified as D. Paokhothang Haokip and his wife, Boishi Haokip, of Chassad village, remain unknown, the KIM statement said.
The Kuki Inpi attributed the attack to the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN (IM), and strongly condemned the targeting of unarmed civilians.
KIM also criticised the state and central governments, accusing them of failing to maintain law and order and prevent attacks by armed groups in the region.
Demanding immediate action, the Kuki Inpi called on the authorities to launch an operation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing and trace the two missing civilians. It said assurances from the government were insufficient and urged concrete steps to ensure civilian safety.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, KIM warned that failure to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice, locate the missing persons and protect civilians could lead to public unrest.
