The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) delivered a resounding performance in the elections to the 19-ward Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), winning 17 seats and securing a clear majority in the civic body.

Polling for the AMC elections was held on April 21 in the Mizoram capital, recording a voter turnout of over 61 percent, according to the Mizoram State Election Commission.

The AMC, established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, governs urban administration in Aizawl.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which had been aiming for a third consecutive term in the municipal body, managed to secure only one ward. The Indian National Congress also won a single ward.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to win any seats. The party had fielded 11 candidates, compared to 19 candidates each by ZPM, MNF, and Congress.

A total of 68 candidates contested the elections this year, including 28 women, reflecting a notable level of participation across parties.

The decisive victory strengthens ZPM’s position in local governance and marks a significant shift in Aizawl’s municipal political landscape.
