Ganggam Soccer Club created history as they won their first title of the Zomi Nam Ni Football Tournament as George Kom's double-strike helped them to a 2-1 win over of Zomi FC in yesterday's high-octane final match played in front of a fully packed crowd at Phungkhothang Guite Mawltual (Lamka Football Ground), Hiangtam Lamka.
Gracing the closing ceremony cum final match as Chief Guest, Losii Dikho, Deputy Chief Minister, Govt. of Manipur, asserted that the youths of Lamka (Ccpur Dist.) deserved a better sporting infrastructure and assured that the government will be working on to improve sports facilities.
Unlike other football finals, yesterday's final match between Ganggam Soccer Club and Zomi FC was tense, spectacular and thrilling as the two sides began the match with high intensity. It was Zomi FC who commanded authority and dominance inside the first 20 minutes with the attacking trio of Khamminthang Tungdim, Sawmboihte-a and Kimkima creating constant havoc for the Ganggam SC defence. However, it was Ganggam SC who put their nose in front against the run of play as George Kom nodded in the opener with a header from a corner-kick in the 20th minute. Feeling undeterred with that early setback, Zomi FC continued to raid Ganggam SC courtyard and they got their reward when Kikima notched in a cross by Khamminthang Tungdim from close-range to level the match in the 30th minute but the joy of Zomi FC was short-lived as Ganggam SC restored lead 3 minutes later with George Kom scoring his second goal with a powerful header connecting a brilliant cross by Singdoulien Khongsai and the highly entertaining first-half ended 2-1 in favour of Ganggam SC.
Trailing at half-time for the first time in the tournament, Zomi FC executed a ruthless second-half attack but highly experienced goalkeeper L. Jeson Vaiphei produced strings of brilliant saves to thwart off attempts by Khamminthang Tungdim, Sawmboihte-a and Khaiminthang and the match ended 2-1 sparking a rapturous joy and wild celebration from the passionate Ganggam fans.
Despite maintaining a strong reputation in District football, Ganggam SC had rarely been close to winning this tournament before but they put all things to bed this term and proved themselves the unlikely heroes to claim this prestigious tournament for the first time in their history.
Altogether, 25 teams participated the tournament with two guest teams from Kangpokpi District namely Football 4 Change and Sadar Hills Football Academy.
