In continuation of a series of protests over the Free Movement Regime (FMR) issue and border fencing, the United Naga Council (UNC) has announced that it will enforce a trade embargo in all Naga areas with effect from midnight of September 8.
The United Naga Council issued a statement on September 3 and made the announcement: “As discussed and resolved in the Presidential Council meeting held on August 11, 2025, we hereby announce that a ‘Trade Embargo’ shall be enforced in all the Naga areas with effect from midnight of September 8, 2025, until further notification,” the UNC stated.
UNC stated that on the impending issue of the unilateral abrogation of the FMR and the imposition of border fencing construction amidst the Naga homeland, the Naga people have made their sentiments and position loud and clear to the Government of India through official memoranda submitted to the authorities, followed by a series of agitations, demonstrations, public rallies, and numerous press statements in a democratic and civil manner since January 19, 2024.
“Yet, the indifferent attitude of the government demands a stringent agitation to register our firm stance against the scrapping of the FMR and the imposed border fencing construction — for the defense of our homeland, identity, and inherent rights over our land,” the statement added.
The apex Naga body in Manipur also requests the kind cooperation and understanding of all concerned, including the general public of the state, and seeks solidarity and support for the Naga movement from all Naga people in the present state of Manipur and Naga brethren across borders.
