The United Naga Council (UNC) has imposed a stricture on all members of the Naga community, directing them to refrain from participating in the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples program, which will be organized by the Indigenous People's Forum Manipur on August 9 at City Convention, Palace Compound, Imphal.

“Upon receiving information regarding the hosting of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by an unmandated organization under the name of the Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur, on 9th August 2025 at City Convention, Palace Compound, Imphal, the undersigned hereby imposes a stricture on all members of the Naga community to refrain from participating in the scheduled programme, as the question of common indigeneity is being brought into question,” stated the UNC in a notice of stricture issued on July 30.

The UNC further stated that it has, time and again, reminded all the tribe Hohos to refrain from attending any meeting, convention, or event hosted or organized by unmandated organizations, as doing so amounts to willful confrontation with the aspirations of the Nagas.

While extending solidarity to the world’s indigenous communities and peoples, the UNC urged all members of the Naga community—both young and old—to abstain from attending the said meeting and instead prioritize the well-being and protection of the Naga community's rights and interests.

“Any recalcitrant individual or tribe participating in the scheduled event or program should not invoke the name of one’s tribe or speak on behalf of the Nagas,” the UNC stated.

Earlier, Ashang Kasar, President of the Indigenous People’s Forum Manipur (IPFM), informed the media in Imphal that the celebration is being organized by IPFM under the aegis of the North East Indigenous People's Forum. He also mentioned that the occasion will bring together prominent personalities, special guests, and delegates from across the North East region.
