
Unidentified miscreants attacked Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai, under the jurisdiction of Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district of Manipur, on Friday evening.
In the attack, which occurred around 5:50 p.m., two Assam Rifles personnel lost their lives on the spot, while five others sustained injuries. According to reports, the Assam Rifles were travelling in a Tata 407 vehicle from Imphal towards Bishnupur.
The injured were rushed to RIMS Hospital, Lamphelpat, in Imphal West district for treatment. As of the time of filing this report, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The identities of the deceased and the injured could not be confirmed at the time of reporting. Following the incident, search operations have been initiated in the area. Spent cartridges were also recovered from the ambush site.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh visited the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, on Friday to meet the injured Assam Rifles personnel.
While condemning the incident, Biren demanded action against the perpetrators. Briefing the media at RIMS Hospital, Biren said, “What do I say now? There is nothing more disheartening than an incident like this happening at such a crucial time.”
Earlier, on social media platform X, Biren posted: “I am deeply shaken to hear about the ambush on our brave 33 Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai. The loss of two jawans and injuries to several others is a cruel blow to us all. My deepest condolences to the families of the fallen and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. Their courage and sacrifice will remain in our hearts forever. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the harshest punishment.”
Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, also joined former Chief Minister Biren in condemning the incident. Expressing profound grief, the Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the martyred soldiers, acknowledging their unwavering courage and dedication in protecting the nation. He also conveyed prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
Reaffirming that such heinous acts of violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances, Governor Bhalla warned that they will be met with the strongest resolve to safeguard peace and stability in the region.
