
A significant milestone in the promotion and institutionalisation of Thadou-Kuki language education was marked with the formal release of “Pao Hetgilna le Kijahmatna” (Knowledge of Language and Communication), the prescribed Ability Enhancement Course–I (AEC-I) textbook for BA/B.Sc./B.Com. First Semester students under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) 2025, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
The book has been edited by noted academic and language scholar Dr. Ngamkhohao Haokip and released by Dr. Seikhohao Kipgen, Principal of Presidency College, Motbung, at the Thadou Kuki Literature Society (TKLS) Head Office, located at Elite Higher Secondary School, Kanggui, Kangpokpi district.
The author is a Ph.D, specialising in Socio-political studies of the tribals. Besides being the Principal cum Administrator of Eklavya Model Residential School, Gamnom Sapormeina, under National Education Society for Tribal Students, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India, he is also the Chairman of Thadou-Kuki Literature Society.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Seikhohao Kipgen, who formally released the book, described the publication as a landmark academic contribution that strengthens indigenous language education within the national higher education framework. He lauded the editorial effort and emphasised that the inclusion of Thadou-Kuki under the AEC curriculum reflects the spirit of NEP 2020 in preserving linguistic diversity while enhancing communication competence among students.
The book was dedicated by Rev. Ngamneo Haokip, Pastor of Kuki Baptist Church (KBC), who underscored the cultural, intellectual and spiritual significance of mother-tongue education. He stated that language is not merely a medium of communication but a repository of identity, history and values, and called upon students and institutions to cherish and uphold their linguistic heritage.
Designed specifically for undergraduate learners, “Pao Hetgilna le Kijahmatna” focuses on foundational language skills, effective communication, and academic competence, making it a vital resource for first-semester students across disciplines. The textbook aligns seamlessly with the multidisciplinary and competency-based vision of the FYUGP under NEP 2020.
The release ceremony witnessed the presence of academicians, educators, church leaders, TKLS members and well-wishers, all of whom hailed the publication as a historic step towards mainstreaming Thadou-Kuki language studies in higher education.
The Thadou Kuki Literature Society reiterated its commitment to the development, standardisation and promotion of the Thadou-Kuki language and literature, expressing hope that the textbook will inspire further scholarly works and strengthen indigenous knowledge systems within the national academic discourse
