Sadar Hills Chiefs Call Attack at Thingkhongjang an 'Act of Terror', Demand Swift Arrest of Armed Assailants

The Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association (SAHILCA) strongly condemned the attack on Thingkhongjang village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, describing it as a "heinous terror attack" on worshippers during Sunday prayers and urging the Centre and the state government to immediately apprehend those responsible.

The association alleged that armed cadres of the NSCN-IM and its proxy faction, ZUF (Kamson), carried out a coordinated attack on Thingkhongjang village under Geljang Sub-Division at around 5 p.m., when residents had gathered for Sunday worship.

According to SAHILCA, the attackers allegedly used an explosive device before opening indiscriminate fire towards the church premises, injuring a woman and a young child. The assault also reportedly damaged a residential house and partially destroyed the church building and property within its compound, forcing villagers, including women, children and the elderly, to flee for safety.

Describing the incident as a barbaric attack on a place of worship, the association said no grievance could justify the deliberate targeting of civilians engaged in peaceful prayer. It termed the incident a grave violation of human dignity, religious freedom and the rule of law.

Expressing concern over what it called an apparent security lapse, SAHILCA urged the Government of India and the Manipur government to launch a transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation, strengthen security in vulnerable villages, and provide immediate medical, humanitarian and rehabilitation assistance to the affected families.

The chiefs' body further asserted that it would firmly oppose any individual or organisation attempting to intimidate or attack villages and innocent civilians, stating that it would not remain silent in the face of violence directed against its people.

Reaffirming solidarity with the residents of Thingkhongjang village, the association prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and reiterated its commitment to justice, peace and the protection of innocent civilians.
