In a significant development following the prolonged ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023, road repair and infrastructure works have resumed in Kuki-Zo dominated areas of Lamka town. The conflict, which had led to a halt in developmental projects, had particularly affected inter-village connectivity and public infrastructure.
On Thursday, 58-Churachandpur Assembly Constituency MLA LM Khaute confirmed that road repair work has commenced at Thangzam Road, Hill Town, funded by the central government. He added that all ongoing and upcoming road construction efforts in the area will use Cement Concrete (CC) for improved durability.
“The central government has sanctioned funds for the construction of several roads including Zenhang Lamka, Zouveng to New Zouveng, Thangzam Road, Red Cross Road, and Dorcas Veng Road,” Khaute stated. He emphasized that these roads will be constructed with an 18-foot width and laid with double layers of Plain Cement Concrete (PCC), ensuring long-term strength.
However, the MLA warned that the longevity of the roads depends largely on community cooperation. Drawing attention to past issues, he cited the example of IB Road, where premature usage by vehicles during the curing period led to early potholes and surface degradation.
“People’s impatience to use newly constructed roads before the concrete fully dries has led to quick wear and tear,” Khaute said. He urged locals to refrain from using roads under construction until they are fully cured, cautioning that early usage would compromise the integrity of the infrastructure.
