Twenty-three BJP MLAs of Manipur convened a meeting on Friday evening in Imphal to deliberate on their collective role in restoring peace, stability, and normalcy in the state.
According to sources, the meeting was held at the residence of MLA Thongam Biswajit Singh in Imphal.
After the meeting, the MLAs issued a joint release on Friday night stating that they are united in their firm belief that a long-term solution to the crisis is both possible and necessary. They emphasized that the solution must rest on the pillars of political will, inclusive dialogue, constitutional safeguards, and impartial enforcement of law and order. They further stated their collective conviction that such a journey must be undertaken in close cooperation between the Centre, the State, civil society, and community leaders.
As per the release, the MLAs thoroughly examined mechanisms for inclusive dialogue involving representatives of all communities in Manipur. They expressed strong support for the establishment of a neutral dialogue platform to facilitate constructive mediation between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, aimed at building trust and consensus on critical issues.
The release also stated that the meeting considered the feasibility of formally approaching the Governor and Central leadership to appoint a neutral Peace Envoy or a panel of eminent persons, comprising voices from both within and outside Manipur. Such a body, operating with the full support of the Union Government and state administration, would play a vital role in facilitating impartial mediation and bridging the trust deficit among communities.
“We emphasize the critical importance of inter-community, people-to-people dialogue at the grassroots level, involving local governance institutions, civil society groups, student bodies, and religious organizations. This will lay the foundation for healing, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence,” the release stated.
Regarding the prevailing law and order situation, it was noted that the MLAs discussed the operational limitations of the current administrative setup. They underscored the need for central paramilitary forces and state forces to act with strict neutrality and discipline.
In reference to the Gwaltabi incident on May 20, 2025, the MLAs urged the government to engage in dialogue with media persons and civil society organizations (CSOs) to find an amicable and honorable understanding. “In this endeavour, we extend our full cooperation,” the release added.
