In a significant development for higher education in Kangpokpi district, a team from the College Development Council, Manipur University, inspected Presidency College, Motbung — the lone government college in the district — to assess preparedness for the proposed launch of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The inspection team, led by Prof. G.K.N. Chhetry (Dept. of Botany), Prof. Ch. Mathew M.K. (Dept. of History), and Dr. Francis Chipem (Dept. of Chemistry), evaluated facilities and academic readiness for upgradation of Honours courses in 11 subjects — Physics, History, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Education, English, Mathematics, Political Science, and Zoology — beginning with the 2025-26 academic session.
During the visit, the team examined faculty strength, laboratories, and infrastructure, while also interacting with both students and teachers of the institution.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Principal S. Kipgen said, “It is an honour for Presidency College Motbung to receive this inspection. If approved, this programme will uplift the education system of the entire district by offering seven and eight-semester options under NEP 2020. Students can pursue advanced degrees without having to spend huge amounts outside the state.”
He further explained that under the FYUGP structure, graduates securing 70–75% and clearing the NET examination could directly pursue a Ph.D. without the mandatory requirement of an MA or M.Sc. degree. “This will be a milestone for our academic landscape, offering holistic and flexible learning opportunities in line with global standards,” he added.
The Principal also appealed to the community for collective support in developing the college and enhancing educational quality in Kangpokpi district.
If implemented, Presidency College Motbung will become the first higher education institution in the district to introduce the FYUGP, marking a transformative step for students in the region.
