The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) has called off the indefinite total shutdown with immediate effect following an amicable solution reached between the ITLF and the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) in the presence of Churachandpur District Administration at the ITLF office on Saturday.
In a release issued to the general public, ITLF stated: "An amicable solution has been reached between the ITLF and the District Administration, Churachandpur, in connection with the loss of our beloved mother, the late Hoikholhing Haokip, Chief of Langchingmanbi Village, at the ITLF Office, Tuibong, according to Tribal Customary Law. Henceforth, the indefinite total shutdown imposed by ITLF in the district has been called off with immediate effect."
According to sources, the JAKLI reportedly tendered an apology for their actions and agreed to pay a sum of Rs 10 lakhs as compensation/ex gratia to the victim’s family. They also agreed to observe all necessary Kuki-Zo tribal customary laws.
Sources informed that during the meeting discussions were also held regarding the maintenance of buffer zones, and it was agreed that security forces shall not harass or arrest Kuki-Zo village volunteers unless hostilities cease with the Meitei community.
Prior to the understanding reached between the two parties, shutdown enforcers had blocked roads in various locations under Churachandpur district and strictly enforced the shutdown.
Educational institutions and other business establishments remained closed, and the streets wore a deserted look.
The burial service of Hoikholhing Haokip will take place at Martyrs Park under the aegis of the Joint Philanthropic Organisation (JPO).
