Deputy Commissioner of Chandel Laishram Nandakumar has said that lack of internet in many border areas of Chandel district makes biometric registration process difficult.
The deputy commissioner made the statement during ‘Hands-on Training Programme on the operation of biometric machines for District Police personnel’ held recently at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner, Chandel.
The training programme was a part of the ongoing process for the registration of illegal immigrants and to ensure that police personnel of the district are fully equipped to carry out online biometric registration efficiently.
During the training programme, Laishram Nandakumar said that as seen in other border districts of Manipur, illegal immigrants have also been detected entering Chandel district.
DC Nandakumar said that although the MHA’s directive mandates online biometric registration, many border areas of Chandel district lack internet connectivity, making the process difficult.
To address the challenge of internet connectivity, assistance has being sought from the Assam Rifles to provide internet access in the border locations so that biometric registration of foreigners can be completed on time said the deputy commissioner.
Nanda Kumar also said that while earlier biometric data was collected physically, the latest MHA instructions require online registration so that details can be uploaded and verified through the Foreigners Identification Portal, enabling accurate confirmation of nationality and identity.
