In a significant political development, leaders from the Kuki-Zo Council and Zomi Council have departed from Lamka to Guwahati for a crucial meeting scheduled for May 16 with representatives of Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups and Kuki-Zo MLAs. The meeting is expected to focus on consolidating the demand for a separate administration in the form of a Union Territory with Legislature for the Kuki-Zo community.
The Kuki-Zo Council delegation includes Henlianthang Thanglet, Chairman; Thangzamang, Secretary (Organisation); Thanglen Mate, Joint Secretary; Rev. G.S. Gangte, Treasurer; Richard Hmar, Finance Secretary; Ch. Ajang Khongsai, Coordinator, Governing Council; Ginza Vualzong, Spokesperson; and members Letsei Mate and Paotin.
From the Zomi Council, Vumsuan Naulak, Chairman; Lianzalal, Vice Chairman; Pauneihlal, General Secretary; and Anthony Lianboi, Finance Secretary, are also en-route to Guwahati to participate in the discussions.
The leaders will engage in talks with representatives from the United Peoples’ Front (UPF) and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO)—two key SoO groups—as well as Kuki-Zo MLAs. Sources indicate that a primary agenda of the meeting will be the strategic strengthening and unification of voices behind the demand for a separate Union Territory within the Indian Union, citing administrative neglect and ethnic aspirations.
