Kuki Inpi Directs Kuki-Zo MLAs to Refrain From Attending Upcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly Session

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of Kuki tribes in Manipur, has directed all Kuki-Zo legislators to refrain from attending the upcoming session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin in Imphal on September 2.

In a statement, KIM said Kuki-Zo MLAs should not travel to Imphal to participate in the eighth session of the Assembly until a political settlement is reached on the community’s demand for a separate administration.

The Kuki Inpi argued that participation in the Assembly while the political issue remains unresolved would be inconsistent with what it described as the collective political position and aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people.

“The Kuki-Zo people have made their political aspirations clear,” the KIM said, maintaining that the demand for a separate political administration cannot be set aside while legislative proceedings resume.

The Kuki Inpi also called on Kuki-Zo MLAs to demonstrate what it described as “political responsibility, solidarity and fidelity” to the mandate of the people they represent. It warned that legislators who disregard the directive could be viewed as departing from the collective political position of the Kuki-Zo community.

The Kuki apex body further questioned the continuation of what it called “business as usual” in the state Assembly, arguing that the political crisis must be addressed before normal legislative proceedings can resume.

According to KIM, participation by Kuki-Zo legislators in the Assembly could create an impression of normalcy and potentially dilute the demand for a political settlement. It therefore urged the legislators to maintain unity and adhere to the directive.

The statement comes ahead of the Manipur Assembly’s scheduled session on September 2, amid continuing political differences over the demand for a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo areas.

The KIM’s directive represents the apex body’s stated position and does not, by itself, determine whether individual Kuki-Zo MLAs will attend the Assembly session.
