As the festival of Diwali draws near, the Kangpokpi Town Committee (KTC) has imposed a complete ban on the sale, possession, and use of firecrackers within Kangpokpi town, citing serious health and environmental concerns as well as the prevailing situation in the state.
In a public notice issued on Sunday, KTC Information and Publicity Secretary Ngulneithang Khongsai stated that the Committee acknowledges the cultural importance of Diwali and the traditional use of firecrackers, but the well-being and safety of citizens must remain the top priority.
“The smoke from firecrackers can cause respiratory problems, aggravate existing health conditions, and heavily pollute the environment. We therefore urge our citizens to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly and responsible manner,” the notice emphasized.
The Committee has encouraged residents to celebrate the festival using LED lights, traditional diyas, and candles to create a warm and festive ambiance without compromising public health.
The notice also made it clear that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the ban and urged citizens to report any sale or use of firecrackers to the concerned authorities.
Reiterating its appeal, the KTC called for collective cooperation from all residents to ensure a safe, peaceful, and environmentally conscious Diwali celebration in Kangpokpi town.
