The International Day of Older Persons was launched today with a special health and wellness programme dedicated to residents aged 60 years and above at PHC T. Waichong in Kangpokpi district.
The occasion was graced by the Chief of T. Waichong, Lhunkhohen Kipgen, and the Chief Medical Officer of Kangpokpi, among others. The event was organised by the District Health Society Kangpokpi with active participation from PHC T. Waichong staff, District Level Officers of NHM, personnel from the CMO pool, and representatives of the KSO T. Waichong block.
As part of the launch, mass screening was conducted for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and hypertension, along with screening for three major cancers—oral, breast, and cervical. In addition, tuberculosis testing and health card enrolment under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme were carried out for the benefit of senior citizens.
The month-long programme is set to feature a comprehensive wellness calendar for older persons. Activities will include health awareness talks, nutritional guidance, yoga and exercise classes tailored for the elderly, as well as workshops addressing mental health, dementia, and age-related challenges.
Speaking at the launch, officials highlighted the importance of prioritising geriatric healthcare and creating inclusive spaces for the elderly in society. The initiative is expected to reach and impact hundreds of senior citizens across the district.
