The All Inpui Students' Union, Inpui Naga Women's Union and Inpui Naga Youth Organisation has expressed profound dismay and astonishment at the joint statement issued by Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and the United Naga Council (UNC) on January 27.
The bodies stated that they are surprised to learn that the UNC, a apex Naga body, has purportedly legitimised K Songlung as a Kuki village, effectively ceding Inpui Naga land to Kuki interests.
The bodies issued a joint release on Thursday clarifying that no village or settlement named K Songlung exists in the area, nor is it recognised in government records.
They claimed that the site in question comprises merely two farmhouses constructed in 2017 on Inpui land, specifically in the Tamphoimon area, lacking historical, customary, or administrative recognition as a village.
The UNC's joint statement with KIM has sowed confusion and misinterpretation, particularly on sensitive issues pertaining to land and settlement stated the release.
The Inpui bodies also stressed the imperative of clarity, factual accuracy, and mutual consultation in addressing such issues to preserve unity, trust, and peaceful coexistence among communities.
They also urged the UNC to approach matters related to land and rights with due seriousness in future.
“In this regard, we seek detailed clarification from the UNC office regarding the joint statement with KIM on January 27, 2026, specifically on the recognition of K Songlung as a Kuki village, and the rationale behind legitimising Kuki claims over Naga land and rights without consulting the concern Tribe and legitimate land owner”, the release added
